Observing and Letting Go of Thought
Thoughts may not be something we must fight,
but something we can let go of.
A thought appears out of nowhere.
The moment we see, hear, or recall something,
it suddenly shows up.
Like a balloon,
it pops into existence
and begins to rise.
As we place attention on it,
it starts to grow.
Related memories and emotions
attach themselves to it,
making it feel bigger and more real.
This is how worries and concerns
are often created.
But letting go of a thought
is simpler than we think.
Instead of trying to remove it,
we simply notice it.
“Ah, I’m having this thought.”
In that moment,
we are no longer inside the thought,
but observing it.
And slowly,
the thought begins to lose its intensity.
It fades,
and eventually disappears.
I practice this every day.
Like waves,
countless thoughts come and go.
I let unnecessary ones pass
without holding onto them.
And in the space that remains,
I choose what to focus on.
That is how
I direct my awareness.
